The news reports about the Legionella outbreak in Warstein in 2013 remain unforgettable: river water contaminated with Legionella was used untreated to operate evaporative cooling systems, and the bacteria were able to spread through the release of aerosols. Over 150 people fell ill, and 2 people died! To minimise these risks, the 42nd BImSchV (42nd Ordinance Implementing the Federal Immission Control Act) – widely known as the „Legionella Ordinance“ – came into force in 2017.
